LATEST NEWS - updated 19 July 2010

Back Home to Winter

We are back home at the farm after the first extended trip away for a very long time. While we were away the farm and Gundaroo Tiller were very capably managed by a hard working team of friends and family. Helen, Mathew, Emrys & Rory - well done and thank you for all your help.

It was quite a shock coming from the middle of summer back to the middle of a Gundaroo winter - dormant garden beds and leafless trees, hard frosts and quite a bit of rain. However work is about to start. It is time to sharpen up the secuateurs, pull out the seed catalogues and start preparing for spring. We will be planting seeds of Eggplants and Capsicums in four days time (three days before the full moon in July) and our tomato seeds will be planted a month later.

Before the rush starts why not get into your garden shed and sort out your tools. Winter is always a good time to oil handles, repair broken blades and why not go through our tool catalogue, there maybe something you don't have that will make your job easier in this coming season.

'Growing the Growers' our filming trip to the USA the UK and Europe

What an extraordinary adventure. Six weeks travelling in the United States, England and Wales finishing with a quick trip to Latvia for mid summers night and then a scything workshop in eastern Czech Republic.

Fred Harden our film maker friend is working his way though all the footage he took and we are sorting out all the still photos. We have images of many small farms and recordings of interesting interviews with farmers, gardeners, teachers, students and philosophers. Now we have to build the story putting it all together in an interesting, accessible form.

The photo diary of where we went and who we saw is on the trip blog. Blogging slowed down once we got to England. Just too many things happening and very little chance to get on the internet however Joyce is back working on it and aims to have it finished in the next few weeks.

Electric Netting Fence

We have now had several shipments of modular electric mesh fencing from the new manufacturer and can report that we are very pleased with the product. They have taken what was always excellent fencing, and with some minor tweaks, have made it even better.

We detect a very different attitude from the company who are dedicated to excellence not only in the product but also in customer relations and prompt service. We think that all the delays we have experienced over the last few years are over.

It is not often that the very best product is also the least expensive but in this case it is true. We urge you to carefully check the specifications and prices of other similar fencing. We also have a most important point of differentiation as we use the fencing ourselves on our own farm and can give advice and help based on our own experience.

Soil Blockers

We really like soil blocker technology and use it extensively on our farm. We have, however, reluctantly decided to drop soil blockers from our inventory. Difficulties with supply and the experience of one of our valued customers has prompted this decision.

This customer, who had a soil blocker on back order for some months, decided to be proactive and contacted a company overseas. The company responded quickly to her inquiry and sent her a blocker at a price less than we could match.

Below are two leads if you want to buy a Soil Blocker.

A very good and easy to deal with English Supplier Blackburry Lane

The English Maufacturer Ladbrooke Ltd

Earthway Row Seeders

We no longer sell nor can we recommend you buy an Earthway Row Seeder in Australia. They are far too expensive and with them available at US$109.00  from Johnny's Selected Seeds we suggest you go and have a look at the great range of seeders on their website www.johnnysseed.com

You can't go wrong if you order at a time when the Australian dollar is strong against the US dollar. Johnny's are a terrific company to deal with. Friendly helpful staff who understand international shipping and they can usually find the least expensive way of getting your purchases to you.
